!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! had his car catch on fire (Taurus SHO), both the dealer and the insurance company investigated and couldn't find a definitive cause for the fire. Ford's stance is that they are not responsible for any sort of fire. The insurance company's conclusion after investigating is to total the car.
My thoughts here are... It is likely a freak accident, the guy that's getting the insurance check is coming out like 5-6 grand above what he owes on the car, should he really be mad (which he is)? Sometimes these things just happen, I'm not so sure it is so wrong of Ford to just let insurance handle this one... Sure the guy can be mad, but I feel he is blowing it out of proportion...
He goes as far as to say he'll never buy another Ford, he'll even recommend everyone he knows never buy a Ford. Do you think he is justified in doing so? I don't. There are waaaayy too many Ford's that are NOT catching on fire for him to have any grounds to make this claim, other than anger. Sometimes life sucks and your car catches on fire. I think his anger is understandable, but to boycott the entire brand over it? I'm not so sure...
So again... What do you guys think you would say/do in this situation?
I personally think I wouldn't boycott the entire Ford brand, especially since I got a good deal insurance-wise...

I'm not surprised. Remember the Ford Pinto?

I remember the Pinto... It has no bearing on this situation whatsoever though. Ford hasn't had a record of Fiery-death-cars in the last, what? 20 years?

Honestly unless I got some pretty kick ass treatment after my car burnt I wouldn't go back to that company.

I guess right now I am not looking at this from an enraged state of mind, but more so a spock-logic-attitude, Most Taurii don't burn, mine did, that sucks. I would probably take the opportunity to own different car, but I don't think I'd exclude Ford from my search, but again I haven't experienced a car fire, so I don't know if that'd still be my attitude after experiencing one, lol.

Not enough facts to know. I might not buy another Ford either since they don't have an explanation, but there are lots of ways a car could catch on fire other than manufacturer defects.
If I were Ford, however, I would probably offer a deal on a new car as a courtesy.

I didn't so any mention of whether Ford inquired if insurance would make him whole, I am inclined to say no though... But especially in case of a fire of unknown cause and no other documented cases of this happening, and remember this is an engine that is used in hundreds of thousands of vehicles (Taurus, F-150, Explorer, Flex), I don't think Ford is wrong to stay away from this one, since it is an isolated case.
This seems like a an insurance case for sure, the more I think about it. This type of stuff is the reason someone has insurance, not everything that goes wrong with a car is a reason to bash a manufacturer.

This guy is being a cry baby. Cars burn it happens to all makes and models. 99.9% of the time it is the driver's fault, I've seen a car burn after a driver when through long grass and it caught in the catalytic converters heat shield. I've seen car stereo installs gone wrong cause fires. This is what you have insurance for. Insurance is there put you back in the same position you were in before the event happened. Ford did nothing to this guy and he is being an ass.

Yeah, that's the conclusion I came to. Sometimes cars just deal you a rotten hand, maybe it's your fault, maybe it isn't. But that's exactly why we have insurance.

That's what I'm now thinking too! The guy just commented on that message board again saying he is pissed at Ford for not being willing to find out if it is theirs or his fault... Seriously? You are pissed because Ford is unwilling to investigate an isolated incident of an engine catching on fire with unknown cause? His blood pressure must be through the roof. Sometimes I hate how readily people in this country want to assign blame and this self-righteous asshole is doing it with 6k in his pocket!

honestly, if i really liked the car, i would actually buy another one. but IF that was the case, id ask SOMEONE to ID what started the fire in the first place. just so i would be able to make sure it didnt happen again.

Yeah, I think it was a freak case of that particular car catching on fire, this engine just does not have a history of doing this. His miles were sufficiently low that high mileage wasn't a concern either. He got $37k out of a burnt car. That's damn good.
It should be said he was running a tune, intake and a few other minor mods and was pushing the engine hard in very cold weather.
